Letting out a shepherd’s hut for Airbnb

“The young couple last week got engaged outside the hut under the stars!”

We recently delivered a shepherd’s hut to a beautiful apple orchard, beneath the ruins of 11th century Ayton castle, in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. We asked owner Jane Duggleby what it’s like to let out a shepherd’s hut for Airbnb’s. “So far we have had singles staying – men as well as women and of course couples. The young couple last week got engaged outside the hut under the stars!”, says Jane. That has to be a sign of how special the hut feels in this magical setting and what an honour too.

Setting up a glamping business with a shepherd’s hut is a very popular choice for many of our customers. Jane explains why, “We stayed in a couple in The Lakes and Northumberland and just loved the whole idea. Out in the wild with the peace, birdsong, nocturnal animals, stars, and of course the cracking logs in the wood burner. I knew just the spot for one in the corner of our orchard.” There is a real romance to sleeping in a shepherd’s hut, a change of scene where one can feel closer to nature.

“As soon as we had furnished the hut, we couldn’t wait to try it out.”

Jane lets out her shepherd’s hut, but does she ever get to spend time in there herself? “As soon as we had furnished the hut we couldn’t wait to try it out. Since then, it has been let and used by relatives who are keen to sleep in there!”.

Choosing your shepherd’s hut interiors is one of the most exciting moments. There are endless possibilities, whether that’s bold and bright or muted and traditional, or anywhere in between. We asked Jane how she styled her hut and here’s what she said. “The interior is furnished in a country style with pictures of sheep, rabbits and Ayton castle. There is also an antique table and Windsor chairs.” This sounds like the perfect country bolthole and as the hut is in walking distance to village amenities and places to eat, it’s hard to imagine somewhere better to spend a quiet weekend.
