A new home for the RHS Bothy

How would you like to own a little piece of garden history? This is the Bothy that once took centre stage in the Grand Pavilion at RHS Chelsea Flower Show, as part of the acclaimed Women in Horticulture feature designed by Pollyanna Wilkinson. It then made its way to RHS Garden Wisley, in an orchard setting near the Hilltop science building, and now it’s back with us, ready for its next chapter.

House & Garden magazine described it as “an elegant hut inspired by the old-fashioned bothy… with an oak stable door and a bespoke writing desk-cum-potting bench,” which sums it up nicely. But the real magic is in the details. The external waisted sides, painted in Farrow & Ball Brinjal – a rich aubergine shade chosen by Pollyanna – mean that it sits snugly in the landscape. Hand-waxed internal sweet chestnut walls, an English ash floor and sweet chestnut windows and door make it feel warm and welcoming.

And then there’s the desk. Modelled on a traditional potting bench in English ash, it carries a very special detail: engravings taken straight from Gertrude Jekyll’s own notebooks in the RHS Lindley Library. Being allowed access to her drawings, and then reproducing them here, was a rare honour – a little brush with garden history every time you sit down to write. Hand-forged iron brackets, inspired by ironwork spotted by Richard at RHS Wisley on a design recce, complete the story.

Measuring 14ft long, with mains electrics and a cast-iron electric radiator, it’s perfect as a home office, art studio, meditation space or simply a unique garden feature. There’s even room to tuck in a bed for guests.
