We worked closely with wonderful clients in the Surrey Hills to build a garden retreat inspired by the charm of luxury safari lodges. With a stunning outdoor copper bath, reclaimed wood cladding and vintage-inspired fittings, their shepherd’s hut beautifully shows what happens when creativity and craftsmanship come together…
Can we start by asking what inspired you to choose Plankbridge for your bespoke hut?
We were first introduced to Plankbridge at RHS Chelsea Flower Show and were instantly taken by the craftsmanship and the rustic charm of the huts – they seemed the most authentic of all the makers of shepherd’s huts.
What was your vision for your hut?
We wanted a retreat that combined luxury with a touch of history, and Plankbridge seemed like the perfect fit for us. Our vision was a hut that captured the essence of luxury safari lodges, using the same canvas as a vintage Land Rover to enclose the outdoor copper bath. Plankbridge’s attention to detail really resonated with us, so we knew we had made the right choice.
How do you use your hut?
It’s our little sanctuary. Our children, who work in London, enjoy using the hut as a retreat whenever they are home.
Your hut is filled with beautiful custom details. Can you tell us about them?
We collaborated closely with the Plankbridge team to incorporate elements, such as a reclaimed wooden plank interior, Bakelite switches and a gorgeous woodburning stove, as well as an enamel basin and a traditional high-level cistern loo in the ensuite. We also included a pocket door leading to the deck where an outdoor copper bath sits. In the kitchen, we chose a Belfast sink and opted for a vintage-inspired wall dish rack rather than traditional kitchen cabinets. All the details came together beautifully.
Where is your hut located, and why did you choose that spot?
It’s in a lovely spot in our garden. Our house has historic ties to Charles Darwin and is right near the National Trust’s Abinger Roughs, with its stunning views. The location feels very serene and connected to nature.
How was it when your hut arrived and was set up for the first time?
Exciting! It was lovely seeing our dream come to life, knowing we had a special place to escape to whenever we needed it. All our friends and family have been amazed by the hut and love the cosy atmosphere we’ve created.
Do you have a favourite feature?
One of our absolute favourite features is the copper bath – it adds a lovely touch of luxury. We also adore the enamel basin in the en-suite and the pocket doors.
What advice would you give to someone considering a Plankbridge hut?
We’d say do it! Embrace the creative process and work closely with the Plankbridge team to bring your vision to life. It’s incredibly rewarding.
