To celebrate 25 years of master hutmaking, Plankbridge co-founder Richard Lee has designed The Hermitage Hut – a beautifully crafted hut, rooted in sustainability, mindful simplicity and a desire to tread lightly on the land. A gentle return to the essence of hut life, the Hermitage invites you to slow down and embrace the freedom of off-grid living, whether deep in woodland, beside a lake or in the quietest corner of your garden or plot.
In a departure from the classic Victorian corrugated-iron shepherd’s hut, The Hermitage is clad in waney-edge Western red cedar – rich in character and Grown in Britain certified to support responsible forestry. Each board is left to follow its natural grain, echoing the organic shapes of the landscape, while a sedum living roof enhances biodiversity and a solar panel provides renewable energy in keeping with our low-impact philosophy. For year-round warmth and breathability, The Hermitage is lined with Thermafleece sheep’s wool insulation.
Ever mindful of our responsibility toward sustainable materials, Richard invited Rose of Jericho – celebrated for their expertise in handmade paints, lime mortars, plasters and renders – to curate a bespoke palette for the tongue-and-groove panelling. Chosen to complement the hut’s natural aesthetic, these timeless shades draw on traditional pigments and natural tones, bringing a soft, chalky depth that enhances the sense of calm and connection to nature.

At the heart of the space is a snug box bed with a Naturalmat organic mattress, handmade in Devon – the perfect cocoon for deep, restorative sleep. A built-in bookshelf at the foot of the bed keeps well-thumbed novels, a pair of binoculars and bird-spotting guides within easy reach, while a feature wall lined with a fragrant flax fleece from Organoid – made from ferns, moss, pine shavings, spruce needles and wild herbs – brings the scent of the wild indoors.
Tucked into a cosy corner, the Salamander Hobbit wood-burning stove casts a warm, flickering glow, offering the perfect place to boil a kettle for tea or warm a pan of soup after a day outdoors, and a fold-down ash desk invites quiet moments of writing or sketching. There’s even space for a comfy armchair for relaxing with a good book or simply enjoying the view, the stable door open to birdsong and the countryside beyond…
