Lake District Shepherd’s Hut Pioneers

The Brief

Rob and Tabitha are Cumbrian hill farmers at the foot of Skiddaw in the English Lake District.  They came to see us ten years ago with the idea of using our shepherd’s huts for unusual camping huts.  True glamping pioneers, we discussed three huts which could combine bedrooms with kitchen facilities, to be sited in new clearings in a conifer plantation.  The accommodation would be off-grid and solar powered.

The Solution

At that time ‘glamping’ was a new term.  Scales Farm was to become one of the pioneering sites for the fledgling ‘Canopy and Stars’, which had just been launched by veteran travel publisher Alistair Sawday.  Together with Rob and Tabitha we designed the custom huts to fulfil the brief of combining the heritage of the original huts with contemporary twists for modern day living.

Summary

One of seven sites to launch Canopy and Stars, this Lake District venue has proved popular ever since.  In March 2018 the huts featured in The Times newspaper as off-grid getaways, free of television, Wi-Fi, mobile reception – truly somewhere to escape to.
